About Laparoscopic Surgery

About Laparoscopic Surgery

What is Laparoscopic Surgery

Surgery is an accepted form of treatment for a variety of diseases. Also, a surgery is like an injury. A surgery which causes minimal injury would be ideal and preferable. Minimal access surgery evolved based on this concept. It provided access to perform surgical cure with lesser damage, allowing the surgeon to keep his incision as small as possible.

Laparoscopic surgery is a branch of minimal access surgery for surgeries related to the abdomen. This surgical technique accomplishes surgical cure through two or more small incisions, instead of a large incision as in conventional open surgery. Typically, a minimal access surgeon conducts the procedure with the assistance of a video camera and several thin instruments. An initial 10 mm incision allows passage of a telescope with a video camera into the abdominal cavity. Under vision provided by this video camera, additional small incisions are made. Though these incisions, long slender tubes are passed to facilitate use of surgical instruments. Usually, these small incisions vary from three to ten mm in size. Thus, the camera transmits the inside the body cavity as an image to a monitor and the surgery is performed by visualizing the organ, using these thin instruments. The additional advantage in this form of surgery is the magnified images of the diseased organ. This improved visualization of the organ is a boon for effecting surgical cure. When the telescope is used for surgeries in the chest, the procedure is called thoracoscopy.

Minimal access surgery allows for diagnosis of various diseases, and provides for surgical cure at the same time. A conventional surgery allows access for surgery through larger incision which involve cutting of the abdominal wall muscles.  The advantages of minimal access surgery over conventional surgery

  1. Early mobilization, shorter hospital stays, faster recovery
  2. Minimal tissue damage and lesser post-operative discomfort and pain
  3. Minimal post-operative infections
  4. Accurate diagnosis as entire abdomen can be visualized during surgery
  5. Scarring is minimal
  6. Reduced hernia incidence at incision site

Minimal access surgery offers one to “Return to Life, Quickly”.

The introduction of minimal access surgery into common practice began as late as 1985, when the first laparoscopic cholecystectomy was first performed for diseased gallbladder removal. Recognizing the advantages of this potential new concept, many surgeons across the globe accepted this form of surgery to improve patient care. Thereafter, the results of applying minimal access to more type’s surgeries were published and were found to be encouraging. These included upper abdominal surgery inc.

MITR hospital was one of the very first in Navi Mumbai & Raigad to support and provide minimal access technologies and techniques to complement efforts of various surgical disciplines performing minimal access surgeries. Today, MITR hospital is a specialty laparoscopy centre for various general, gastrointestinal, urological (adult & pediatric) and gynecological diseases. All the divisions are dedicated to performing surgical procedures using minimal access techniques whenever possible, so that patients may enjoy faster recovery and fewer post-surgical complications.

Most accomplished and proficient surgeons routinely employ minimal access techniques for various diseases related to the abdominal and thoracic cavities include:

  1. Colorectal surgery
  2. Hernia repair
  3. Cholecystectomy (gallbladder removal)
  4. Gastroesophageal reflux disease
  5. Small bowel diseases like Malrotation, Strictures, Mesenteric cysts, etc
  6. Upper gastrointestinal tract including Duodenal ulcer, Gastrectomy, etc
  7. Esophageal disorders including Achalasia cardia, etc
  8. Bariatric (obesity) surgery
  9. Mediastinal masses like thymoma
